Each month, Flame Tree Story founder Whitney Fry hosts an hour on WCOM 103.5 FM as part of The Carrborean Radio Hour. She brings in members of the community to share stories about their lives: meaningful moments that contribute to who they are today, and how these moments shape how they show up in the world. Listeners will enjoy seeing themselves in the stories of others and finding clarity about their own lives—all thanks to the art and power of storytelling.

Vianna’s vision is to encourage others to find this same truth in themselves, using the power of story.

Dr. Amanda Bennett is Carrboro’s 2026 Poet Laureate. She joins The Carrborean Radio Hour with Flame Tree Story to talk about poetry as a form of storytelling. In this show, Dr. Bennett unlocks for listeners the power of poetry to speak into our personal and collective lives, calling forth inspiration from her own stories to encourage future generations of young Black poets to thrive.

Lorie Clark’s family heralds seven generations in Carrboro. Her great, great grandparents, Toney and Nellie Strayhorn, bought land and settled as the first Black and formerly enslaved family in the town. In this show, Lorie shares stories passed down through generations, revealing how storytelling—as the language of her ancestors—ushered in a legacy of faith and service that benefits the wider community.
